Young voter turnout expected to decrease in 2012 election

A mountain of upcoming outreach goals at the Organizing for America office in Boulder, Colo., a candidate-affiliated office that aims to get young people to vote.
It’s not just reporters and analysts who are predicting a decrease in voter turnout among under-30-year-olds this presidential year; 2008 and 2004 were outliers in what has been a historically declining turnout rate since the 1960s, according to the Census Bureau.
Lots of talk about the dire state of the “youth vote” this year.
Ann Beeson from UofT blogged on nytimes.com yesterday about “why young people can be enthusiastic volunteers and organizers but tepid voters.” I agree with her that 3 main factors are at play:
1) young folks don’t see a connection between voting and their commitment to make the world a better place,
2) there are real reasons to be cynical when it comes to politics (think: big money), and
3) ”let’s face it, civic engagement can be a snore.”
Why else do you think Tumblr’s getting in this game? Hopefully, together, we can help bring a fresh perspective and begin to strip away some of the “snore” factor. And while some of our snark may seem cynical, make no mistake: we believe it’s better to have a stake in the process than to reject it outright for being imperfect.
What else would you like to see Tumblr do as part of this effort? Submit or ask here!
Do you know why you should vote? This is why you should freakin’ vote.
